Vaping products are for adult smokers and existing vapers only. Not suitable for non-smokers or those under 18.

From 1 October 2026, every e-liquid sold in the UK carries a new Vaping Products Duty of £2.20 per 10ml, which works out at £2.64 per 10ml once VAT is added.

That applies to nic salts, shortfills, freebase and nic shots alike, at any nicotine strength including 0mg (zero nicotine). What it actually adds to your basket depends on what you buy and how much of it, which is exactly what the calculator below works out for you.

Calculator - How Much Will You Pay?

The Three Dates That Matter

This isn't a single overnight switch. It lands in one step on 1 October, but there's a fixed window either side of it that decides what you'll actually see on the shelf.

What the Duty Actually Is

The duty itself is simple: a flat rate per 10ml, with VAT added on top in the normal way.

Same flat rate whatever the nicotine strength, including 0mg. A 10ml nic salt at 20mg carries exactly the same duty as a 10ml 0mg shortfill top-up.

Which Products Does the Duty Apply To?

The duty follows the liquid, not the packaging or the format, so it's worth knowing what's actually covered.

Bottled e-liquid. Nic salts, shortfills and freebase e-liquid are all taxed on the millilitres they hold. A shortfill is taxed on its full volume before you've even added a nicotine shot.

Prefilled pods and pod kits. Anything with liquid already sealed inside, whether that's a prefilled pod kit or a pack of replacement pods, is taxed on the total liquid it contains rather than on the hardware itself.

Nic shots and 0mg liquid. A 10ml nicotine shot is 10ml of taxable liquid in its own right, and nicotine-free shortfills carry exactly the same duty, because the charge is on volume, not on nicotine content.

What It Adds to Each Type of Product

Because the duty is per millilitre, the effect on price is very different depending on what you buy. A single pod barely moves. A 100ml or 200ml shortfill takes the biggest single hit, since the whole bottle is taxed before you've added anything to it.

Duty plus VAT only, not a shelf price. Flat rate for any nicotine strength, including 0mg.

What It Adds to Your Monthly Spend

Bottle size only tells you so much. The clearer way to see the impact is against how much you actually get through in a month.

Based on £2.64 added per 10ml (26.4p per ml), across a 30-day month. Your own figure depends entirely on how much you get through, which is what the calculator above is for.

Can You Still Buy Stock Without the Duty After October?

Yes, for a while. Stock that entered the supply chain before 1 October 2026 can continue to be sold without a duty stamp right through to 1 April 2027. That's a genuine window rather than a loophole, and it's worth knowing about if you tend to buy the same shortfill or nic salt regularly, since older stock and newly duty-paid stock may sit on shelves side by side during that period at different prices.

The Duty Stamp: How to Spot Legitimate Stock

From 1 October 2026, duty-paid e-liquid carries a small, secure duty stamp on the retail packaging, sealing it so it can't be opened without breaking the stamp or the box. It's the clearest visible sign that a product has actually been through the duty process.

Once the grace period ends on 1 April 2027, every legal product on sale has to carry one, and the duty itself sets a price floor that no compliant retailer can sell below. Buying from an established UK retailer is the straightforward way through the transition.

Why the Same E-Liquid Might Show Two Prices

Between October 2026 and April 2027, shops can legally sell pre-duty and duty-paid stock side by side. Flavours that sell quickly get restocked sooner and pick up the duty first, so the same product, even the same flavour, can briefly show two different prices depending on which batch it came from. It isn't a pricing trick, just the natural overlap of old and new stock during the transition.

Will Vaping Still Work Out Cheaper Than Smoking?

For most people, yes. The NHS notes that switching from smoking to vaping can still save money over time, and the duty adds pence per millilitre rather than pounds per pack, so it narrows that gap rather than closing it. Heavier users of large-format shortfills will feel it more than someone on 10ml nic salts, which is exactly the kind of difference the calculator above is built to show.

What This Means Next Time You're Ordering

If you already know roughly what you get through in a month, the calculator above will give you a realistic picture of where your spending is heading from October. For anyone on 10ml nic salts, the increase is modest and multi-buy pricing softens it further. For shortfill users, it's worth checking whether shifting some of your usage to nic salts makes sense for you on the volume maths alone, alongside whatever flavour and strength preferences matter to you day to day.

Common Vaping Tax Questions

Do I need to do anything as a customer once the duty starts?

No. VPD is paid by the manufacturer or importer before the product reaches us, and the duty stamp is attached to the packaging as part of that process. You'll simply see it reflected in the shelf price, the same way VAT already is.

Will vape kits and devices go up in price too?

Not because of VPD. The duty applies specifically to vaping liquid, not to devices, pods, coils or tanks, so hardware pricing isn't directly affected by this particular change.

Does buying multipacks reduce how much duty I pay?

No, duty is charged on total volume regardless of how it's packaged or discounted, so a multi-buy deal doesn't reduce the duty itself. It can still reduce your overall spend in the normal way multi-buy pricing does.

Does the duty apply to prefilled pods and disposable-style kits?

Yes, on the liquid inside them. A kit or pod holding 2ml of liquid is taxed on that 2ml, the same as a bottled e-liquid would be.

Where can I check this information myself?

Everything above is drawn directly from HMRC's published guidance on Vaping Products Duty and the Vaping Duty Stamps Scheme, current as of 4 August 2026.

When the blog recommends an e-liquid or a device, he has used it. Juice gets tasted over multiple sessions and in more than one device, because a flavour that sings in one coil can fall flat in another, and hardware gets lived with long enough to find out how it wicks, how the battery holds up and where it starts to slip, rather than repeating what's on the spec sheet.

Health, safety and regulatory points are checked against named UK authorities such as the NHS and MHRA, and a product is only ever called "less harmful than smoking" where a UK authority says so. More about how he works is on Joe's author profile.
