From being championed as a benefit to the health and finances of smokers, to exploding devices and house fires, there seems to be a fair amount of conflicting information with regards to whether it is safe to vape? Let’s take a look at the positives and the pitfalls of vaping and what to keep an eye out for in order to maintain a healthy and positive vaping experience.

Safety is a natural concern that as human beings we adopt to anything new that is presented to us - from the auspicious to the suspicious, we just like to know that we’re going to come out okay at the other end. Learner drivers taking to their seats in ‘death machines’ err on the expected side of caution. Standing atop a 60-metre slide at the waterpark before you descend to the shallow splash pool below may present a similar prudence. Whatever the weather we’re a precautionary people, which is why the question ‘is it safe to vape?’ should be met with as much trepidation as booking a holiday to Tenerife.

With regards to the safety and longevity of our bodies, to put it simply, vaping has not been around long enough for us to determine any long-term health risks. Public Health England published an expert independent review stating that vaping is around 95% less harmful than smoking conventional tobacco cigarettes. Needless to say, if you are a smoker, then vaping is a safer alternative to your existing habit.

E-LIQUID

The vapour we create via our devices is formed as we heat the e-liquid inside. E-liquid contains food flavourings which were of course not intended to be inhaled and as yet we don’t know what effect this may be having on our lungs. Vaping is big business and as with any lucrative venture, the market is prone to imitation. When making your e-liquid choice, try and find out as much about the contents of the liquid and what is being used to flavour your vape and check the e liquid expiry date. If you are on a quest to find the best ‘you’ and are already establishing a healthier and more natural lifestyle, then why not adopt the same approach to your choice of e-liquid? It makes sense right?

EQUIPMENT

You may have seen and read the accounts by journalists and onlookers as a family home goes up in smoke - made all the more horrifying by the causality of a combusting vaping device being identified as the main culprit. Immediate warning signs enter our periphery as we ask ourselves if our very own devices could do such a thing. Should I run home to see if my house is still there? When we look further into the case in question, we soon discover that a battery being charged by an incompatible device is more often than not the true liability. Rather than a device spontaneously laying waste to its surroundings, it is more-so a case of negligence with regards to reading the accompanying instructions or warning signs. Always check the compatibility requirements of your devices, batteries and charging options when purchasing a new kit, simple. It only takes a second and you’ll soon be safe in the knowledge that your device is ready and set for you to vape away.

Safety is so often determined by oneself, so whether you’re vaping, swimming with sharks, counting shooting stars or charging your device – stay safe out there.
